U.S. Farm Bill and the EU Common Agriculture Policy at Crossroads -A Global Dialogue on U.S., Canadian and EU Agriculture policies
US Farm Bill and EU Common Agriculture Policy at Crossroads: A Global Dialogue on US, Canadian and EU Agriculture policy reforms and their potential impacts for farmers, consumers, and the environment both at home and in developing countries. The Farm Bill WG collaborated with IATP, ActionAid US, Collective Strategie Alimentaire, Germanwatch, GRET and Coordination SUD, to develop an educational forum held May 14-15 in Washington, D.C. Approximately 60 representatives of farm groups, developmental, environmental and consumers groups working from the US, the EU, Canada participated. Representatives from farmer and agriculture trade advocacy groups from Mexico, Brazil and Senegal were also included in the dialogue. Competition Title: This WG has raised the question about broadening engagement in campaigns around a Competition Title in the next Farm Bill. Currently the House Farm Bill has no such title, and efforts are underway to include a Livestock Title in the Senate version of the Farm Bill. As this title suggests, livestock producers (as well as poultry growers) are the groups of concern here. On the one hand, this is very important for dealing with structural injustices in livestock markets; on the other hand, there is much more to be done in returning open and fair markets to all manner of agricultural and food production. The WG is trying to figure out how to broadenor how to think more boldlyabout lack of competition in the marketplace.
