Transnational Corporations and the Global Food System
| Title: | Transnational Corporations and the Global Food System | | Author: | McLaughlin, Martin M | | Date Published: | January 1, 2002 | | Source: | Center of Concern | | PDF: | | | Abstract: | This chapter from the book World Food Security describes in very accessible terms the structure and behavior of the global food system, likening it to a corporate cartel dominated by a handful of powerful food companies. |
This chapter is from the book World Food Security: A Catholic View of Food Policy in the New Millenium, which can be purchased from the Center of Concern. Note: the rapid pace of food company mergers and acquisitions means that the details in this chapter--company rankings and subsidiaries--are only as recent as the date the book was published. However, the major thrust of the article--that "the global food system strongly resembles a cartel"--remains true. In fact, as time passes, this argument is further validated by the continued concentration and consolidation among agri-food companies. |
